Physical Therapy

The primary objective of physical therapy is to promote optimum human health and function using specialized techniques. Working in conjunction with physicians, physical therapists are a valuable member of the health care team. They are trained to improve movement and function, relieve pain, and expand mobility potential. Through evaluation and programs of treatment, physical therapists can help existing problems and provide preventative health care for children with a variety of needs.

Physical Therapy services may be required for infants with:

  • Genetic/congenital disorders
  • Prematurity (birth of an infant before 37 weeks)
  • Intrauterine infections
  • Disorders of growth
  • Prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol
  • Child abuse and neglect
  • Multiple births
  • Musculoskeletal/orthopedic disorders
  • Cardiopulmonary dysfunction
  • Neurological disorders
  • Burns
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Cancer

Therapy services may be required for children with:

  • Genetic/congenital disorders

Physical Therapy services may include:

  • Facilitation of age appropriate gross motor skills
  • Promotion of independent mobility
  • Prevention of muscular contractures/joint deformities
  • Promotion of proper postural reactions
  • Improvement of sensory-motor function
  • Evaluation for adaptive equipment/orthotics
  • Improve sensory integration
  • Improving gait
  • Improving balance and coordination
  • Improve function and ability to negotiate environment safely
  • Improve self esteem and independence
  • Neuro developmental treatment ( NDT)
  • Cranio sacral therapy
  • Infant massage
  • Pediatric yoga
  • Improving a child's ability to negotiate their community and educational environments.

Services are typically provided on an individual basis. Group sessions include infant massage and pediatric yoga.


Kids in Action of Long Island, Inc. offers physical therapy evaluations and treatment services to infants and children 0-21 years old. Contact us regarding Early Intervention and Preschool Services.

Authorized Early Intervention, Pre-School CPSE and CSE services for eligible children are provided at no out of pocket cost to families. All professional staff are qualified, specially trained personnel credentialed and submitted to New York State for background checks by Kids In Action and licensed or certified by the State of New York.
